Rivers leads Chargers to 21-13 victory against Broncos

I am not sure if they were trying to play it safe after the injury or if the short game was the plan.

When you have a young, talented team like the San Diego Chargers do, you’re going to see some growing pains.

When they come back, the team will use that refreshment as a chance to start fast when they get back into the building, something they are looking to do when they get out on the field, too.

Broncos left tackle Russell Okung was taken from Qualcomm Stadium in an ambulance after the team’s 21-13 loss to the Chargers on Thursday. But it buoyed them a bit and offered a lifeline, and given that anything can and usually does happen in the National Football League, that’s pretty much all they can ask for at this point. “We just didn’t think he was ready”. “We’re not being aggressive and fiery enough, and teams are taking advantage of that”.

At the end of the game Denver had given up 12 penalties for 103 yards, and a lot of that was down to the O-line not being able to handle the Chargers’ pass rush.

Ultimately, the defense did tighten up, but they could never fully recover from the marathon that was the first quarter. “I care. This is my job”.

After the Broncos offense promptly folded on the subsequent drive, San Diego did it again.

In the three other games played this year – all Denver wins – the Broncos lost the toss, the opponent deferred, the Broncos received the opening kickoff, and the Broncos won each game. And the Broncos’ allowed it, as they often have this season.

Broncos vice president of public relations, Patrick Smyth, said Okung experienced symptoms of a concussion and was taken to a San Diego hospital for further evaluation.

Siemian hit Bennie Fowler for a 5-yard scoring pass midway through the fourth quarter, drawing the Broncos within 21-10. Fumbles by receivers Jordan Taylor and Demaryius Thomas thwarted comeback attempts.

SD-Lambo 32 yard field goal, 3:31. Melvin Gordon rushed for 94 yards, rookie tight end Hunter Henry grabbed six catches for 83 yards, and the defense put up a strong effort for most of the night. The return of Virgil Green and Donald Stephenson from calf injuries did not appear to help matters early. Conservative play-calling and quick-trigger throws stalled the passing game.

It was just the sixth win in the last 22 games for the Chargers, who continue to threaten to move to Los Angeles if voters don’t approve a $1.1 billion public handout in the form of a hotel occupancy tax increase on the November 8 ballot. In two games to start the season, an Anderson-led Broncos run attack gained 282 yards.

Is it just one close win?

The defense trotted on, only to watch the Chargers pad their lead to 19-3 on field goals.

“I didn’t look at it like I was a head coach”, DeCamillis said Friday.

The effective included San Diego’s first drive of the game, a 75-yard, 14-play possession in which Rivers kept slicing and dicing the Broncos defense over the middle and in the flat.
