Fans of BBC drama Bodyguard were left wondering if Keeley Hawes could really return in series two after she reprised her role in a Comic Relief surprise.

Hawes returned as Home Secretary Julia Montague, who appeared to have been killed off during series one, in a sketch for this year’s charity show.

Her co-star Richard Madden had already been given a new job – protecting a new prime minister played by Joanna Lumley.

On seeing Hawes, Madden said: “You’re dead.” But Hawes asked: “Am I?”

Since the end of the hit series, written by Jed Mercurio, fans have speculated about survival theories that could yet see the pair reunited for another TV adventure.

And that moment happened when Madden and Lumley’s armoured car was stopped by a familiar-looking police officer – Supt Ted Hastings, played by Adrian Dunbar, from Mercurio’s other hit show Line Of Duty,

He checked the car’s boot and discovered Hawes there.

This year’s Comic Relief show also saw the cast of Four Weddings And A Funeral reunited for the first time in 25 years.

The mini sequel, entitled One Red Nose Day and a Wedding, saw Rowan Atkinson return as the blundering vicar to officiate at the nuptials of a new generation – and this time it was a gay wedding.

The film’s lead characters Carrie (Andie MacDowell) and the bashful but charming Charles (Hugh Grant) were in the congregation as their daughter married the daughter of Fiona (Kristin Scott Thomas).

The two brides were played by Lily James, star of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, and Alicia Vikander, who won an Oscar for her role in The Danish Girl.

There were plenty of jokey references to the original film, including its most-quoted line – as Grant’s character claimed that he “hadn’t noticed” it was raining.

By the end of the broadcast, more than £63m had been raised. The last Red Nose Day, two years ago, raised £82.1m.

The highest amount the event has raised so far came was £108.4m in 2011. Half the money raised from Comic Relief goes to causes in the UK and half to those around the world.

Earlier in the fundraising TV show, Little Mix looked less than impressed when former shadow chancellor Ed Balls had a go at singing one of their biggest hits, Shout Out To My Ex.

The chart-topping band and the Strictly Come Dancing favourite were among a number of celebrities who climbed Africa’s highest mountain Kilimanjaro to raise more than £2m towards the show’s final total.

Former England football captain David Beckham again teamed up with James Corden to poke fun at his own previous fashion choices, in a comic video monologue at the start of the night.

But One Direction star Louis Tomlinson pulled out of his planned performance following his sister Felicite’s sudden death.
