No cases of Zika virus have been reported in Pennsylvania.
But amid all the reports, we want to hear from the people in countries affected about what’s happening.
The disease is most commonly transmitted via mosquito bites and is an active threat in the Caribbean, Mexico and South and Central America, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The guidance was published following laboratory tests confirmed the first case of Zika virus infection in a non-traveler in the continental U.S.
“I wish we knew more about Zika today, I wish we could do more about Zika today”, said CDC Directer Tom Frieden in a morning press conference.
Frieden offered his strongest comments yet about the link between the insect-borne virus and the birth defect, microcephaly, which causes babies to be born with unusually small heads and cognitive problems.
Brazil says a national mobilisation day will be held on Saturday, during which thousands of soldiers and state employees will work work to eradicate mosquitoes in homes and offices.
“When you find a virus or fingerprints of a virus in a body secretion, it absolutely does not mean that it is transmitted that way”, Fauci said.
As the weather becomes warmer in the United States, health officials predict the Zika virus will spread and will lead to pockets of outbreaks.
The guidance also suggests the men might consider abstaining or using condoms even with a partner who isn’t pregnant.
Florida Surgeon General Dr. John Armstrong joined Scott in Tampa Thursday and said the tests are especially critical for woman who have traveled overseas, and may wonder if they may have contracted the Zika virus. Health officials said a person in Texas who had not traveled to an outbreak area was infected through sex. Men with pregnant partners who visit (or live in) Zika-affected areas should abstain from sex or use condoms for the duration of the pregnancy, the CDC said.
To date more than 1.5 million Brazilians are thought to have been infected and the virus has spread to at least 23 other countries.
However, the Zika virus hasn’t been found in mosquito populations in the U.S.
But health officials have confirmed that there are two cases of the Zika Virus in Nebraska. “Symptoms typically begin two to seven days after being bitten by an infected mosquito“.
