Zika virus unlikely to be a threat in Utah County

It is now telling men who have been to areas with outbreaks of the Zika virus to consistently use condoms during sex with pregnant women.

Pregnant women should consider postponing travel to areas where Zika virus transmission is ongoing.

Meanwhile, in the first case of its kind in Europe, Spain’s Health Ministry said a pregnant woman who had returned from Colombia had been diagnosed with the virus.

Scientists don’t know if Zika can be transmitted through these bodily fluids.

Zika virus is mosquito-borne and is mainly spread through the bite of an infected mosquito.

Meanwhile, officials in Panama say they are focusing their fight against Zika on the mosquito that carries the virus.

One involved a man spreading the virus to a woman and their sexual contact occurred a few days before the man’s symptom onset. Another is for men who have been exposed to a Zika-affected region to properly use condoms when having sex with a pregnant partner. Scientists are researching reports earlier this week that an American had transmitted the virus to a sexual partner in Dallas County, Texas.

“It was known that the virus could be present in both urine and saliva“. But it has become a concern because of a possible link with a birth defect in Brazil.

The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes).

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has revised its guidelines on dealing with Zika virus. Up to this time, the mosquito that carries the disease has not been found in Pennsylvania. Because only one in five people have symptoms of the virus, tests try to detect those antibodies to determine exposure.

Spokesman Farhan Haq says Ban Ki-moon believes that “women must have a meaningful way of controlling their own decisions on whether and when and how to be pregnant”. And a 2011 paper documents a man who unwittingly infected his wife with Zika after they had sex upon his return from Senegal where he was studying the mosquitoes responsible for Zika transmission.

The CDC also updated its advice to women who are already pregnant and who have been or are in Zika-affected areas. In addition, the revised guidelines address testing for women who reside in areas where Zika is spreading. The primary means of transmission remains the mosquito.

The Fiocruz team studied samples taken from two patients who showed symptoms of Zika and also tested positive for the illness.

“We are asking those governments to go back and change those laws”, she said.

According to the CDC, the virus is primarily transmitted by mosquitos and can not be transmitted by casual person-to-person contact.

This week the World Health Organization declared Zika a global public health emergency after it was linked to brain deformities in babies in South America.
