Tears for Schweinsteiger in last game for Germany

Bastian Schweinsteiger cries Germany 2-0 Finland

Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger captained Germany for the last time in a 2-0 friendly victory over Finland on Wednesday, receiving an emotional send-off to end a 12-year worldwide career that included the 2014 World Cup title.

New captain Manuel Neuer says Germany have room for improvement when the world champions start their journey to the 2018 World Cup on Sunday in their opening qualifier against Norway.

Manuel Neuer has been named Germany’s new captain, following the retirement of Schweinsteiger from global duty.

Emre Can has paid tribute to Bastian Schweinsteiger for a long and successful Germany career.

Schweinsteiger is fourth on the list of Germany’s most capped players, while the former Spurs striker leads the charts for The Boys in Green.

Neuer, meanwhile, revealed he was very proud to accept the honour of being named national team captain. “I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it’s very hard that an opportunity will arrive”, said the Reds’ boss.

Even after being banished from the Manchester United first team by manager Jose Mourinho, Schweinsteiger dismissed reports of a rift between him and the Portuguese. The 32-year-old took over the armband when Philipp Lahm retired after the 2014 World Cup.

The global against Finland in Borussia Moenchengladbach, which is doubling as Schweinsteiger’s farewell on his 121st appearance, is not expected to sell-out. I don’t know how many minutes I’ll be able to play since I haven’t had any game time since the Euros.

“I believe in my ability”.

“We’re all sad”, Ozil added.

“We are in a fortunate situation with the national team that we have several leading figures who have what it takes to be captain”, Low said on the German Football Association’s (DFB) website. He has everything that I would wish for from a leading player. One thing is for sure: I’m not going to stop playing football.

“He brings everything that I want from a captain”.
