MORE than 20 people have been injured after a train carrying 187 passengers clipped the back of a semi-trailer in the US overnight.

KTLA reports the crash occurred about 10.40am Tuesday (3.40am Wednesday AEST) in Sun Valley as the six-carriage train travelled to Los Angeles.

According to a Los Angeles Fire Department alert, the Metrolink AV Line 212 train “collided with the rear of a tractor trailer truck”, leaving 21 passengers with minor injuries.

The injured commuters were treated at a triage area set up at the scene before they were taken to hospital.

Aerial footage showed firefighters helping passengers off the train, which was stopped at an intersection near San Fernando Road.

By midday, the train was back on track and headed to its next destination.

But officials warned passengers to expect delays of more than an hour due to the collision.
