Sheriff's office investigating 'creepy clown' online threats to Edwards-Knox, Potsdam, Hermon-DeKalb students

In all, 12 people have been arrested for making false threats.

Poudre High School’s principal had teachers read a message to all students Thursday morning, according to the Coloradoan newspaper.

“Student safety is important and we are aware of rumors regarding persons dressing up as clowns and causing alarm/concern as it pertains to student safety”.

Those who don the traditional bright makeup, oversized shoes and bulbous red nose of clowns do so to make people happy, to cheer up the sick and make children laugh.

The officer also suggested that creepy clowns started to pop up right after Wal-Mart and other major retailers began to sell Halloween costumes. The first reports surfaced back in late August in Greenville Country, South Carolina, where children claimed that clowns were trying to lure them into the woods with handfuls of cash.

The Jefferson City Police Department said they haven’t received any reports of clown sightings.

While Chief Wojciechowsky called that incident a prank, the clown phenomenon had a more profound impact on school districts, as several in OH closed down and others added extra officers.

As “creepy clown” sightings keep happening all over, a local woman is very anxious because she works as a real clown, and is afraid to do what she loves. She was soon taken into custody and is now being held in a juvenile detention center.

“The clown suit was yellow”.

Jonathan Martin, 20, was charged with wearing a mask in a public place and disorderly conduct.

The unexplained rash of clown sightings has led some to suggest the phenomenon is part of an elaborate hoax, or an attempt at a viral marketing campaign.

This year’s hysteria seems fueled by social media and copycats.

Pasco County Schools in Florida were also on alert Friday after receiving a threat on social media. But he says his department takes all calls involving harassment or disturbing the peace seriously.

The district said they are erring on the side of caution in this situation.

“People are scared”, said Troiano, who recalled comforting a frightened woman as she waited to pick up her child. But officials were quick to add that doesn’t mean arrests won’t be made.

A Louisiana sheriff put a picture and note on Facebook recently after two people dressed as creepy clowned just showed up at a store and were ordered out by the owner. But law enforcement agencies across the region are warning residents to be wary.

“Over the weekend, we did see an increase in clown costumes”.

In Batavia, police responded to a home on Central Avenue for a report of clowns in a vacant house.
