The Republic’s handling of the Zika outbreak “represents in many cases a role model”, said a senior World Health Organization (WHO) official on Friday (Sept 2).
Since the outbreak began previous year, more than 1.5 million people have been infected with Zika in Brazil, and more than 1,600 babies born with abnormally small heads and brains. Zika infection can also be spread by infected men and women to their sex partners. Of those who do have symptoms, the most common are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes).
As there is a general concern over Zika, he said, the health ministry has alerted the medical teams in all worldwide air and seaports to make sure the incoming travellers go through the thermal scanners so that any suspect of Zika infection can be tracked.
“This is disappointing but not surprising”, Florida agriculture commissioner Adam Putnam said in a statement Thursday. The vast majority of the cases were from people who traveled to a Zika-prone country, such as Brazil.
The ministry did not specify the locations, but the virus has been spreading daily beyond an initial cluster.
Friday said Zika virus infection and its associated congenital and other neurological disorders continues to be a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, due to continuing geographic expansion and considerable gaps in understanding of the virus and its consequences.

After returning to her home near the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, she fell ill and diagnosed with “suspected” zika, based on a urine test while full confirmation through blood test is left. Strategic use of available health and human resources is essential to prevent or mitigate the health, economic, and social consequences of Zika virus, especially in resource-limited countries.
The health chief also called on the public to help eliminate mosquito breeding places, as this will not only address possible transmission of Zika but also reduce cases of dengue. The USA, Australia, Taiwan and South Korea have urged pregnant women against travelling to Singapore.
The current Zika outbreak began in Brazil in the spring of 2015.
