Scientists are anxious about the loss of clarity in the alpine lake caused by a wide variety of factors over past half-century, including housing construction, storm-water runoff, automobiles and aquatic species.

“We tend to think of climate change as if it’s something that’s just happening out there that we don’t have control over”, he said. The average surface temperature of the lake, 53.3 degrees, was the warmest ever recorded.

Obama’s conservation tour comes at the start of a busy trip to Asia, Obama’s final as president and one of his last opportunities to lock in his administration’s seven-year effort to expand USA engagement with Asia, including trade ties and cooperation on climate.

“Our healing of Lake Tahoe proves it is within our power to pass on the incredible bounty of this country to the next generation”, he said.

“It’s not going to happen if we boast about how we’re going to scrap worldwide treaties, or have elected officials who are alone in the world in denying climate change, or put our energy and environmental policies in the hands of big polluters”, Mr. Obama said.

Obama drew some groans from the crowd when he said he had never been to the iconic tourist destination.

The two California senators have joined with their counterparts in Nevada in an effort to reauthorize the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act, which is still pending in Congress, and provide hundreds of millions of dollars more to protect the lake from pollutants and restore the health of the surrounding forests. “For the Washoe people it is the center of their world”.

Obama announced that the Department of Interior will spend almost $30 million on wildfire prevention at Tahoe this year. He jokingly said he will have to drive instead of get a ride on Marine One. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein. Jerry Brown and assistant U.S. Interior Secretary Janice Schneider.

“A single wildfire in a dangerously flammable Lake Tahoe Basin could cause enough erosion to erase decades of progress when it comes to water quality”, says Obama.

Brown noted the irony of two Republican governors overcoming their distaste of government to create a new bureaucracy specifically to protect Lake Tahoe.

Protecting and preserving Lake Tahoe – it’s the goal of the annual Lake Tahoe Summit.

Reid says that thanks to the almost $2 billion that has been spent to reverse a loss of clarity since 1997, Lake Tahoe is now “more pristine than it has been in decades”.

With his second term winding to a close President Barack Obama took to the shore of Lake Tahoe to defend his legacy on environmental issues.

After the Nevada event, Obama will travel to Hawaii, where he’s scheduled to address the heads of state of a number of Pacific islands at a conference Wednesday night in Honolulu.

To that end, Obama on Thursday planned an unusual presidential visit to Midway Atoll, a speck of land halfway between Asia and North America.

Congressional Republicans and the energy industry have resisted Obama’s climate plans at every step, including through numerous lawsuits and legislation that he has vetoed.
