Newcastle targeting Blackburn defender Hanley

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez with Siem De Jong

The Blackburn and Scotland defender, 24, could join Newcastle in the next few days as Benitez continues his revamp of the Championship club.

He has been on the books of Blackburn his entire professional career and has a contract that runs until June 2018.

The Daily Star state that Newcastle boss Benitez is expected to overhaul his under performing squad over the summer transfer window as the club look to make a swift return to the Premier League.

His partnership with Irish global Shane Duffy at the heart of the Rovers defence was formidable at times last season, and there is no wonder that clubs are sitting up and paying attention to the young pair.

Magpies manager Rafa Benitez, who is looking for a centre-back following the departures of Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor, has identified the Blackburn skipper as a potential signing.

Sky sources also say Newcastle will sign another defender this week having previously brought in two forward players in Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie.

Speaking to the club website, Rafa justified what he was attempting to instill saying: “It’s important when you have a lot of experience as a coach and manager to pass on your knowledge and techniques to others, especially within the Club”.

The St. James’ Park-based club were relegated from England’s top flight last term, finishing in 18th position with 37 points. Let us know your opinion below!
