An unimpressed Kimmel responded, “Good one”.
“There’s an after party?” said Kimmel, looking crestfallen.
Downton Abbey icon Maggie Smith knows host Jimmy Kimmel joked about her absence at Sunday’s Emmy Awards gala and she has released a reply worthy of her countess character.
Aziz Ansari (who wrote a New York Times op-ed entitled “Why Trump Makes Me Scared for My Family”) was sarcastic as he presented an award, saying he was endorsing Trump, “which is why I’m recommending we get rid of all Muslim and Hispanic nominees from the ceremony, immediately”. Then Best TV Movie victor Steven Moffatt called out his wife, “Not only does she rock.whatever that was, but she actually produces the show”. So when Smith won for best supporting actress, Kimmel pulled a Kanye West and, unscripted and hilariously, returned to the stage to snag the trophy himself.
Who is “responsible” for Trump’s rise, Kimmel asked.
Dame Maggie Smith may not have been at the Emmys to accept her award, but that hasn’t stopped her from stealing the show.
“She is one of those actors you look at, and say, ‘How on earth does do they do it?’”, he continued.
After winning best comedy actress for a fifth consecutive time for HBO’s “Veep”, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who plays flawed USA president Selina Meyer on the show, said “I want to personally apologize for the current political climate”. “Please tell me you’re seeing this too”, Malek said when he got onstage.
However, Maggie Smith herself has said in the past that she doesn’t think her involvement would be logically possible, considering the show’s timeline; telling The Graham Norton Show, “By the time we finished, she must have been about 110”.
Kimmel didn’t waste much time in his opening monologue before calling out “The Apprentice” producer Mark Burnett for helping launch the Trump phenomenon.
“Our show started out as a political satire, but it now feels more like a sobering documentary”, she deadpanned onstage after her win for outstanding female lead in a comedy.
He also challenged her to “get (her) Dowager Count-ass over here”.
Ouch. That’s the kind of love she gives Kimmel’s sweet mom for trying to make everyone happy? But presenters and hosts during past award shows have at least tried to even out their biting jokes, making them at the expense of both candidates.
