“We have every reason to believe this was an act of terror”, de Blasio said at a news conference on Monday. “We have to end this”, he said.
New York’s governor now says it looks like the Manhattan bombing could be an act of terrorism with a foreign connection.
Police have since connected the New York City and New Jersey shore town bombings and say the same man is being sought for questioning in both.
Ahmad Khan Rahami was arrested in 2014 on charges of stabbing a person in the leg and possession of a firearm.
Ahmad Khan Rahami, the 28-year-old man, suspected of planting the bombs in NY and New Jersey, was captured on Monday after an Indian bar owner alerted the police about his presence near his business. “He is about 5.6 tall, has brown hair, brown eyes, and brown facial hair”, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said, adding that the suspect could be “armed and dangerous”.
Police have not confirmed whether these two men are the same men who law enforcement officials are now seeking for further investigation. No one was injured or killed.
A second bomb that was discovered almost four blocks away was defused successfully by the bomb disposal squad.
Rahami was seen in the surveillance footage from the site of the Saturday night explosion that wounded 29 people at a crowded neighbourhood in Chelsea, Manhattan, and from near an unexploded device found the same night a short distance away, according to media reports citing officials.
Early Monday, FBI agents swarmed an apartment above a fried chicken restaurant in Elizabeth that’s tied to Rahami.
On Sunday, several devices were found near a train station in Elizabeth, New Jersey, near the home of Rahami and his family. The official says investigators were also able to recover his fingerprints from the scene.
Sires said that Rahami was “kind of nasty” when he called his office from Islamabad, Pakistan asking for help. New Jersey State Police later confirmed Rahami was also linked to a separate explosion reported Saturday morning in Seaside Park, New Jersey. The family has a history of clashes with the community over the restaurant, which used to be open 24 hours a day, Mayor Chris Bollwage said. “And in all likelihood the Elizabeth [, N.J.,] train station device-which is a half-mile from his residence”. The device that exploded in Chelsea contained residue from the commercially available explosive compound Tannerite.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said as investigators gathered information, they learned there were “certain commonalities among the bombs”, leading authorities to believe “that there was a common group behind the bombs”.
