Evans sharp again as Hokies beat Miami, 37-16

Mitch White

The Hokies are now 22-and-9 all-time on Thursdays – day on which it will play again next week.

The Hokies return their top four scorers and top five rebounders from a team that matched a program high with 10 ACC wins.

Virginia Tech defensive tackle Woody Baron had 2.5 sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss. Virginia Tech sacked Miami quarterback Brad Kaaya eight times and finished with 12 tackles for loss.

But Miami moved 75 yards on six plays in just over a minute right before the half, getting a 39-yard pass from Kaaya to Ahmmon Richards up the sideline and later a 25-yard TD catch by Braxton Berrios.

With a new head coach in Justin Fuente, Virginia Tech has exceeded expectations a bit. That’s why they’ve won so many games.

“When you run the ball well, you tend to get third-and-medium, third-and-short”, Richt said. He said he failed to prep quarterback Brad Kaaya for what he was supposed to see against the Hokies.

“The five-day turnaround, in my opinion, I don’t think it’s very good even though both teams are doing it”, Richt said. “What better way to get rid of it?”

Miami tied the game late in the first quarter but the Hokies couldn’t help but feel that they dodged a bullet.

“I thought it was a more average game for us”.

It was the second collaboration for a touchdown between Evans and Hodges on the night. “He’s got a good arm”. But this was the first one he has thrown for Fuente. His most impressive flash was Miami’s final drive before halftime, when the junior showed his mental strength in addition to his arm.

Q. You were talking earlier about Miami’s defense. Miami has lost two straight, to Florida State and North Carolina. Me being the most experienced, I knew that the younger guys were going to follow my example, like they have from myself, Nigel and Ken. The reason for that is a combination. Defensively, Miami is allowing 14 points and 313.2 yards per game. Some of it because of their scheme and other parts of it are because of their personnel.

Replacing most of the secondary and overhauling the offensive line are the major goals this recruiting cycle, and Miami needs to add depth at receiver. The linebackers, they have two true freshman linebackers that are actually really good. “The D-line, they have a bunch of animals down there”.

In the third quarter of Tech’s game against Miami on Thursday, the Hokies called for what looked like a garden-variety sweep run.

NOTRE DAME: Athletic director Jack Swarbrick said Brian Kelly will not be coaching for his job when the Irish (2-5) resume play out of this weekend’s bye. That may seem like quite a reach with a Blacksburg Thursday night coming up, but you Can’t give up on something illogical happening in favor of the Hurricanes, since what already has happened makes no sense to me at all.
