As such, Estrada, who received cortisone shots on Monday to treat soreness in his back, will attend the all-star event, but he won’t pitch. “And I guess my worst nightmare unfortunately came true”, Estrada said. “I don’t know if it’s the right thing to do or whatever, but it’s what I want to do. And I think this is going to benefit me in the future”.
Estrada first dealt with a sore back in spring training and aggravated the injury swinging a bat during an interleague start at Philadelphia.
Estrada, who has the best hits-per-nine-innings rate (5.52) and opponents average against (.173) in all of baseball alongside a 5-3 record and a 2.93 ERA, said on Tuesday “the team has to come first and if I can’t pitch for the team then I shouldn’t pitch anywhere else”.
Earlier in the evening it was announced that Donaldson, Edwin Encarnacion, and Marco Estrada had been elected to the upcoming MLB All-Star Game.
Blue Jays manager John Gibbons was confident that Estrada would be able to make his next start, which is scheduled for Thursday at home against Detroit.
“I feel really honoured and happy to make it again”, Encarnacion said following the announcement, adding, like Donaldson, he doesn’t intend to take part in the home run derby either.
“I’ll be there supporting the guys and I’ll just enjoy every minute of it”.
Tonight’s matchup was Chris Young against the Blue Jays in Toronto.
“We just thought it was best”, Gibbons said. “We’ve got to worry about this team”. Drew Hutchison will start in his place against the Tigers on Thursday.
It appears that will be the case, with Estrada not likely to return prior to Toronto’s first homestand after the break, beginning July 22 against the Mariners.
Blue Jays: RHP Marcus Stroman (6-4, 5.08) allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings against Cleveland in his most recent start after allowing 38 earned runs in his previous eight outings. I really can’t give an answer right now. But obviously it’s not up to me. On Tuesday, shortly after Gibbons told him he’d been selected to the team, Estrada spoke to the media at length about how long he’d wanted to pitch in an all-star game, and how proud his family was to see him finally accomplish his goal.
Manager Ned Yost said Young tried moving to the third-base side of the mound to give him “more deception”.
“He’s definitely an All-Star-caliber-type pitcher”, Yost said. Michael Saunders remains a voting candidate for the final spot on the American League roster. During pre-game warmups most of the Blue Jays were wearing shirts supporting “Captain Canada”.
Saunders will be vying for his first all-star game appearance.
NOTES: Royals RHP Wade Davis (forearm strain) was put on the disabled list Tuesday retroactive to Friday.
Relief pitcher Bo Schultz was called up from triple-A Buffalo to replace Estrada on the Blue Jays roster.
The Blue Jays won the game, 8-3, and the outcome was never in doubt.
