Sam Bradford reflects on the day he was notified of his trade to Minnesota and his time with the Eagles.
“They’re coming in here and it’ll be a good one”. How much will either of those things matter Sunday when Bradford leads the Vikings against the Birds? “He’s not the most mobile guy in the world, everybody understands that, so I think there’s some opportunities for us to be able to stay after him”. “You have to learn the cadence, you have to learn the huddle, you have to learn the terminology, you have to learn the other guys’ names, where the splits are, routes, checks”.
“From the bruise on your leg when we argued … to the zipper that caught you last April. I’m sure some people find that hard to believe”, Bradford said of his year and a half in Philadelphia. “I think that’s when games can go wrong”. I still keep in touch with a lot of those guys.
But he has more pressing duties than to simply catch up with his old buddies.
For the Eagles, they are coming off two straight poor games. “But at the same time, it’s training camp”. But, I’m not going to stand here and point the finger at “Big V” (Vaitai), because that’s not what happened. They’ll be trying to get back on the right track this week at Minnesota’s expense. “I was looking forward to building on what we were able to do in the second half of past year”.
He will do well to remember Cox. Pederson gave him complete autonomy over that side of the ball when he hired him in January. The Eagles rush at a per-game clip of 113.6 yards per game, which is the 8th-best in the league.
“It’s one of those schemes where they don’t do a lot”. They fly off the ball now. So that’s always a threat. From their standpoint, they got a good quarterback. “It’s a good offense”. Carson Wentz completed 11 of 22 passes for 179 yards. How badly is Bradford going to be booed Sunday?
“I was obviously pretty surprised, but I was super excited”, Wentz said. “Just one. There’s no interceptions and that goes a long way”. I thought he stood in there and did a nice job as the game wore on. “I’m very fortunate with where I’m at right now”. He’s either in the shotgun or getting the ball out quickly. “So, he has been impressive”. Here’s a quarterback who arrived in Minnesota weeks before the start of the regular season, learned the playbook in 15 days, and led the Vikings to a surprising 5-0 record; all without a number of key contributors on offense.
In fact, “my plan was for him to sit the whole year”, Pederson said Wednesday on a conference call, via the St. Paul Pioneer Press. “It’s weird. A few weeks back, Sam was getting ready to be our starting quarterback and now we’re getting ready to play him. You go off the tape and you do the best you can”.
Wentz said that when Bradford was here, he was a big help explaining Pederson’s offense, and sharing his knowledge of other National Football League systems. That’s why Doug Pederson, for one, isn’t anxious about Wentz. By putting their No. 1 announce team on it, with Brennaman pinch-hitting for Joe Buck, Fox clearly sees Vikings-Eagles as the best game available to them this week. “That’s all part of the learning curve of a young quarterback”.
Washington outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan registered two sacks in the Eagles’ first offensive series.
Minnesota is 16-5 ATS in their last 21 road games and 24-8 ATS in their last 32 vs. the NFC while the under is 16-6-1 in their last 23 games overall. The Birds’ offense has been more effective at Lincoln Financial Field, where their rookie quarterback can more easily check in and out of plays, using words, not motions.Revamp those dire preseason predictions, based on an unproven rookie quarterback, the impending suspension of your starting right tackle, and a suspect secondary. “I could tell early on he wanted to be great, that he was committed”. Wrong month for that, I guess; we’re not even through trick-or-treating yet. Check around the Internet for further updates on both teams throughout the rest of the week.
Through the first part of the NFL season, the Vikings have looked like one of the best teams in the entire league.
